Jack Saxby, 22, from Penrith, Cumbria, has been awarded the Worshipful Company of Farmers Prize.
The prize is awarded to the best BSc (Hons) Agriculture final year student with the highest mark obtained for an investigational project.
Jack Saxby won the award for his project entitled: The vegetative growth of three landrace wheat varieties vs three modern wheat varieties up to stem extension.
Principal lecturer, Dr Russell Readman, said: “Jack’s project researched the history of wheat breeding, managed a field experiment and wrote an excellent thesis with some insightful analysis and discussion. The project is topical given an increase in interest in heritage varieties from artisan bakers, and the field experience of running crop trials.
“Jack will stand Jack in good stead for his career as an agronomist.”
The award is presented by Philip Wynn, master of the Worshipful Company of Farmers Prize.
